Professional Development Networks (PDNs)

PDNs are informal networking groups that organize around a particular subject area or geography. PDNs are for anyone who wishes to network with other professionals around a particular topic, process, function and/or industry. Individual meetings are usually structured around a specific topic in which the whole group is interested.
CCASTD is proud to sponsor the following PDNs:

What is Appreciative Inquiry?
AI is a theory and practice developed by David Cooperrider at Case-Western Reserve University in Cleveland in 1987. It involves 1) recognizing and valuing the best in the people around us, affirming the past strengths, successes, and potentials, perceiving those things that give life, health, vitality, and excellence to organizations; and 2) exploring and discovering, or being open to see new potentials and possibilities. This approach is a breath of fresh air in that it focuses on what works as basis for moving the organization forward.

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) PDN is currently on hiatus.
If you are interested in reviving this PDN please send an email to admin@ccastd.org

NEW CCASTD Professional Development Network (PDN)!

Cognitive Learning Science

Come to the inaugural meeting of the new Cognitive Learning Sciences PDN!

Date:       May 30, 2008
Time:       11:00 registration and networking, 11:30 – 1:00 panel discussion
Location: Roosevelt University, Downtown Campus
Gage Building, 2nd Floor Commons Area
               18 South Michigan Ave, Chicago

Cost: FREE, Bring your own lunch – we’ll supply beverages and desserts.

How do people learn? How do we master skills, gain competency and expert abilities? The leading edge, scientific approach to answering these questions is called Cognitive Learning Science (CLS), which is based on research and discoveries in the rapidly expanding field of Cognitive Neuroscience.

This is a rapidly expanding area, which uses quantitative, scientific methods to understand the mechanics of how people actually think and learn, based on the underlying psychological processes.

By applying this research to the development of training programs, we can increase motivation, minimize the time to proficiency, and maximize an organization’s investment in training.

The Cognitive Learning Science PDN will provide a forum for students, educators, and training professionals to share information, brainstorm, and stay abreast of the latest research and developments in the Cognitive Learning Sciences. Members will share their experiences in applying these new research concepts to the very practical field of training and development.

Please join us on May 30, 2008 to start this discussion! During our kickoff session, we’ll further define Cognitive Learning Science and discuss common applications to training in a panel format. Panelists include:

  • David N. Rapp, PhD : David Rapp is an Assistant Professor of Learning Sciences at Northwestern University, in the school of Education and Social Policy.  His research focuses on comprehension, including the design of visualizations and textual presentations intended to facilitate students’ understanding of complex concepts and procedures in educational situations.
  • David Foster, PhD: David Foster is Dean of Advanced Program Development at DeVry University Online.  Prior to joining DeVry, Dr. Foster was a Director of Online Course Development at UNext (now Cardean Learning Group), and also headed R&D for the training simulations group at Accenture.  Dr. Foster earned a Ph.D. at the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University, where he developed interactive methods for teaching analytical business subjects with automated tutoring.
  • Marty Rosenheck, PhD, CPT: Marty Rosenheck has designed award-winning e-learning systems, conducted needs assessments, developed curricula, and created blended learning strategies for numerous non-profit and for-profit organizations over the past 20 years. Based on his doctoral studies in Cognitive Science, Marty developed a case-based learning approach called Performance Centered Learning® that accelerates people’s attainment of proficiency in complex skills. Marty has shared his ideas on developing expert performance as a visiting professor at Loyola University and in numerous publications, presentations, and workshops.

In this new PDN, we look forward to a collaborative environment, where we can share challenges, solutions, and innovations. Quarterly sessions will alternate between downtown and suburban locations.

The Cognitive Science PDN is sponsored by Cedar Interactive and led by its Chief Learning Strategist, Dr. Marty Rosenheck.

Please RSVP by contacting Susan Robbins at 847-331-3771 or srobbins@cedarinteractive.com.

Since our first meeting in the fall of 2006, this group has quickly grown into a regular attendance of 30 people with a core group of 10-15 regulars! Feedback about our topics has been very positive so far, and we would like to invite you to help us continue that by providing your input on topics and perhaps by helping us find presenters.

This meeting will not be a content presentation, but rather a planning/steering meeting. Our objective is to create a draft schedule of topics and presenters for July 2008- June 2009. Last year's planning meeting was very productive identifying topics and speakers of interest. John Kelly, Moderator, personally invites you to attend this year's planning meeting and come with your good ideas and suggestions. Below is the agenda:

  • Welcome & Introductions
  • Brainstorm potential topics
  • Potential presenters
  • Volunteers to approach potential presenters
  • Discussion regarding original vision and practices for our PDN

If you are unable to attend, we would still like to hear your opinion. Please share your idea with someone that is attending or email it directly to Nancy Herz at nh@fulcrumnetwork.com. Provide as much detail as possible, for instance "how to create a leadership pipeline program" vs. something broad like "leadership development."
